Reinventing the pen

OHTO developed water-based ink in 1964, inventing the rollerball and changing pen history

Pen pioneers

Back in 1964, OHTO reinvented pens as we knew them by replacing the oil-based ink traditionally used in ballpoint pens with a water-based ink of their own devising. This seemingly small innovation introduced the world to what we now know as the rollerball pen, and created a whole new writing experience that delights us to this day.

Made in Japan since 1949

Launching with a pencil-shaped ballpoint pen, OHTO was the first ballpoint pen manufacturer in Japan. But far from settling, OHTO's restless innovation has elevated their pens to cult status among stationery lovers all over the world.
